Lady Indians, Leah High and Shanna Law, in white, battle with their Pottstown opponents in front of the goal during Monday afternoon's game at Upper Perk.
Off to a fast start in the PAC-10 this season, the Upper Perkiomen field hockey team picked up another win on Monday afternoon against visiting Pottstown.
Junior Leah High contributed three assists while senior Rebecca Connor scored twice and senior goalkeeper Laura Burst made nine saves as the Indians stayed undefeated in the league with the 4-1 victory.
“We really played well and strung our passes together. This was probably our best game of the season so far,” said Connor.
Cassidy Arner opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game after collecting a pass from High and firing it in from close range. Eight minutes later, Rachel Steinman scored with another assist from High to give Upper Perk a two goal lead.
Before the Trojans had a chance to regroup, Connor scored to make it 3-0 in favor of Upper Perk.
The Indians controlled the opening half with smothering offensive pressure that made it difficult for Pottstown to even clear their own end of the field. At the break, Upper Perk was outshooting Pottstown by a count of 17-2.“We were passing well in the first half and getting shots off; that’s what we wanted to do,” said Upper Perkiomen head coach Jamie Warren.
Jessica DeCandro scored Pottstown’s only goal of the game with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The Trojans were noticeably more organized in the second half, as they created several good scoring opportunities in an attempt to come from behind, but Burst made seven saves during the final thirty minutes to keep the Indians in front.
“She had that initial save every time, and the defense has to take care of the rebounds,” said Warren.
The only goal of the second half was scored by Connors, who redirected a hard shot from High into the goal with twelve minutes remaining.
“Sometimes you have to be lucky. When you’re playing the post, you have to keep your stick down and be ready for the ball,” said Connor of the goal.
For the game, Upper Perk racked up a total of 32 shots, compared to just 10 for Pottstown.
“Our communication is getting better every game. We all work well together, and it shows when we can set up each other like that,”
“I think we focused on playing our game today,” said junior Brooke Oliver.
Warren was pleased with the consistent offensive pressure, which created nine corners for the Indians, because the team had been working on set pieces in practice all week.
The victory improved Upper Perk to 2-0 in the PAC-10 (2-1 overall), while Pottstown fell to 0-2. Both teams, along with Pottsgrove, St. Pius X, and Phoenixville, play in the league’s Frontier Division.
Monday’s victory marked the beginning of a busy week for the Indians, who traveled to St. Pius X on Tuesday afternoon. Then, Upper Perk heads to Pottsgrove on Thursday, and has a non-league game on Saturday morning at Downingtown West.
