Frederick R. Bergen
Frederick R. Bergen, 76, husband of Esther M. (Rodenberger) Bergen, of Red Hill, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the eldest of three sons to the late Edward F. and Mabel (McIlrath) Bergen.
Fred was a truck driver and a teamster for 20 years for Eustike and Co. in Bristol, until moving in 1971 to the Perkiomen Valley. His passion for cooking began at his first job during his younger years at a pizza shop. He began his restaurant entrepreneurship by operating Vince’s Pizza Shop in Zieglerville and later in Harleysville. He and Esther then went on to operate the former Evansburg Country Kitchen in Evansburg. After retiring from the restaurant business, he kept with his cooking passion by working part time as a cook for Macoby Wetlands Golf Course, Green Lane, and presently at the Francis Kaufmann House, Sumneytown.
He was a member of Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schwenksville. Fred loved golf and was an avid golfer. He ran the Senior Golf League at Macoby and presently the Senior League at Hickory Valley Golf Course in Gilbertsville.
He will be severely missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 22 years, are his children Richard Bergen and his wife, Angie, Las Vegas, NV; Steven Bergen and his wife, Jacqueline, Austin, TX; Russell Bergen and his wife, Lori, Breinigsville; Linda wife of Vincent Pultorak, Schwenksville, and Maria Bergen, Austin, TX; step-children Lisa wife of James Pfister, Spring Mount; Michael Benner and his wife, Robin, Pottstown, and David Benner and his wife, Lori, Danville; brothers Edward Bergen and his wife, Barbara, Hazelton, and Carl Bergen and his wife, Barbara Ann, Headland, AL; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 311 2nd Street, Schwenksville. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will follow in Schwenksville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Jerusalem Evangelical Church, Schwenksville.
