John Robert (Bob) Koestel, 93, of Reading, formerly of Green Lane, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Berks Heim Nursing Home in Leesport, where he has resided since November 5, 2012. He was the son of the late John R. and Florence (Caldwell) Koestel and the loving husband of Catherine E. (Sadorf) Koestel. The couple celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on January 10, 2013.
Bob was a retired die setter in the steel industry. He was also a proud World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army, 77th Division, 305th Artillery Battalion, in the Pacific Theater of War. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, along with the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his son, Robert J. Koestel (Jill) of Reading; two granddaughters, Kristina Mumma (Joseph) of Birdsboro and Deanna Koestel of New York, New York; one grandson, Jonathan Koestel of Reading; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Mumma and Adam Mumma; and one brother, Harry Koestel of Ocean View, New Jersey. He is also predeceased by his three brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service was held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Monaghan Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Red Hill, PA 18076. A viewing preceded the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the funeral home. Interment followed the service in Holy Cross Cemetery, Pennsburg.
