Suspicious Backpack Causes a Scare at Wells Fargo Bank

Route 29 closed to traffic for 90 minutes

East Greenville Fire Company was dispatched around 4:50 Thursday afternoon to the Shoppes at Upper Hanover on Gravel Pike for a report of a suspicious package at the Wells Fargo Bank.

According to a state police report, a woman entered the bank around 4:30 p.m. and was exhibiting strange behavior, causing bank employees to become alarmed.

The woman abruptly left the bank, leaving a backpack inside. Employees contacted the state police to report the incident.

The bank and other surrounding business were evacuated as a precaution and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Disposal Unit responded to analyze the backpack. They determined that the backpack did not pose a threat.

The suspicious woman has been identified and no charges are expected to be filed; however, the investigation is ongoing.

In addition to state police and volunteers from the East Greenville Fire Company, fire police from Pennsburg Fire Company and an emergency medical service unit from Upper Perkiomen Ambulance assisted at the scene. Upper Perk Police assisted with traffic control at Sixth and Main streets in East Greenville.

Gravel Pike (Route 29) was closed for about 90 minutes between Sixth Street in East Greenville and Kraussdale Road in Upper Hanover Township during the incident.
