Rev. R. William Phillips Jr.
Reverend R. William Phillips Jr, 87, of the Lutheran Community at Telford, and formerly of Red Hill, passed away September 1, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Elva Louise (Place) Phillips. Born in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Rolland William Phillips, Sr. and Edna (Hendrickson) Phillips. Reverend Phillips was a Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. Following his service, he entered West Chester University where he received a BS in Music Education in 1950. He became a public school music teacher, first in Fleetwood, PA and then in Haddonfield, NJ. An early career change launched him into the world of sales in Nashville, TN and eventually led to his position as Regional Sales Manager for Nashville Wire Display Company.
Five years after returning to Pennsylvania, Reverend Phillips decided to enter the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia from which he graduated in 1969 with his Masters in Divinity. Reverend Phillips first call was as Pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Downingtown. His next call was as Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Red Hill, where he served for 14 years before retiring in 1990. Reverend Phillips participated on the Evangelism Committee for the Southeastern PA Synod of Lutheran Churches, and was the North Penn District Convener. He continued as a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Red Hill.
Surviving are sons: William Bradford Phillips, and his wife, Amy, of Downingtown; David Arthur Phillips, of Royersford; and Richard Wayne Phillips, and his wife, Lee, of Breinigsville; daughters: Gail Louise, wife of Charles Koup, of Wilkes-Barre; and Trudy Ann Phillips, wife of Craig Newberger, of Lansdale; sisters: the late Betty Robinson, of St. Paul, MN; and June, wife of Elbert Scouten, of Tuscon, AZ; 11 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Hill. A Viewing will be from 9-10 AM at the church. Interment will follow in the adjacent church cemetery. The Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc, Pennsburg, is in charge of arrangements.
